Painting the Figure with Hollis Dunlap

Dates: April 1, 2019 - April 5, 2019
Recurrence: Recurring daily

Instructor: Hollis Dunlap

We are thrilled to have Hollis Dunlap back to Townsend Atelier! We will focus on creating a strong sense of 3-dimensional space and form by looking at light effects, proportions, edges, and various methods of paint application. Hollis will encourage a practical use of anatomy, focusing on major anatomical landmarks, and we will study the way that master painters model form and make color choices. Several techniques will be demonstrated as we observe of the model in 6 to 12-hour poses, such as how to plan the composition, conceiving shapes in 3 dimensions, paint application, interpreting color based on the sources of light, and how to revise the painting as you go. Students will be encouraged to focus on their ability to work from the largest masses first, to create a sense of finish before small details are added. Basic geometric shapes will be used to describe forms of the human body to give the painting a convincing sense of form, in order to gain confidence in painting directly from the model. Workshop fee includes model fee. Students will be painting each day from an unclothed model with 1-2 days devoted to painting the portrait.
